This short silent film depicts two queer women coming together and making a connection.

With one's self (2025) During the 2020 pandemic, I found myself in my final year at University, trying to navigate through the challenges and uncertainties it brought. Despite the difficult conditions, I chose to stay at my university accommodation and faced feelings of intense loneliness. It was during this period that I decided to channel my emotions into a creative project - a short film. This project became a form of self-discovery and a way to experiment with different aspects of filmmaking.Research indicates that men are more sexually aroused by visual stimuli, but women are more sexually aroused by concrete, auditory, olfactory, touch and emotionally relevant sexual stimulation. The film's focus is on the act of self-touch and the sensory experiences that arise from it for a woman. It explores the power that embracing and loving oneself as a woman can evoke feelings of warmth, contentment, and a sense of safety similar to that experienced with a partner.We live in a world where, as women, we are still pressured by a nonsensical life purpose to be paired off with someone for life. A place where we are celebrated more by producing offspring rather than succeeding in our true dreams. It uses the accumulation of detail and dread — through Annie’s anxiety and Berit’s growing sense of dislocation — to tell an allegorical story of queer fear and the ways in which safety is perceived, understood, and abused in queer life.I looked at myths and stories of wood nymphs and dryads as the foundation for a (spoiler) skin-stealing creature that uses queer attraction and intimacy to move from body to body. Like sea sirens, wood nymphs emerged in folk tales to explain the fates of people who went missing, were injured, or were murdered in the woods. The legend goes that nymphs use music and the allure of the female form to lure unsuspecting travelers to their deaths, and consume their bodies and souls for their own nourishment. The tale varies slightly from culture to culture, but anywhere there are woods, there are wood nymph stories.I used practical FX to demonstrate Annie’s “monstrosity” as it emerges, along with the good old fashioned tools of story and editing to create the sense of horror, dread, and dislocation we feel as Berit’s fate grows more and more inevitable.The LA-based grunge band SLUGS has agreed to lend their music to the production, including letting us rework "Cool World" in one of our scenes. Please tell us your motivation for making your film:Recently a friend and I were swapping bisexual dating tales. She had met someone online; since she was already going on a solo camping trip, she suggested they meet up there. “Wait,” I asked. “You met a stranger in the woods for a first date?” “Yes.” But, she clarified: “Not a man.” Whew. I relaxed, and then I started asking myself questions: Why was I more worried when I thought my friend was meeting a man as opposed to any other gender? (We know why but stay with me.) How do queer people perceive safety and danger differently than straight people do? If you’ve spent most of your life being afraid of men, what happens to fear when men aren’t around? And what if I used these questions to turn the “cabin in the woods” trope on its queer head? Thus IDLE/WILD was born. Soon I realized I was also writing about my own fears related to my place in the queer community and what safety or danger meant to me. As for my friend’s date: They had a very nice time, but they weren’t ready to commit. My friend woke up, safe and solo, in her tent. Annie and Berit’s story has…a different ending. Many women rely on this desire for validation as well as self and social worth. Realizing one's lesbian identity forces one to acknowledge and process this. Coming out often means a rejection and mourning of this previous life. When a bird hits a window, it is generally a male bird seeing his reflection and believing it is a rival attempting to usurp his territory or his women. He flies into the window to destroy his rival. In this case, his rival is femme queerness. In a male-dominated heteronormative world, it is the death of the bird that acts as the catalyst to the film.We structure the film into three parts. Act one is the rejection of the desire for male attention. Act two is the intimacy and intensity of one's first lesbian relationship. He first caught the storytelling bug while traveling in an RV with his family and videotaping eccentric people that he’d soon base his stories on. Andrew graduated from Florida State’s College of Motion Picture Arts with an emphasis in directing. Andrew loves creating comedic films with a personal, heartfelt touch. He’s based in New York City. Director StatementA good portion of my childhood was spent in church camps, both as a camper and as a counselor. Like many LGBTQ youth, I struggled with being bisexual while also being involved in church life. I even came out to a pastor, which probably wasn’t a good idea at the church camp I was at, where speaking in tongues and crying about sensual desire was par for the course. I have been hesitant about making a film about my sexuality for as long as I’ve been making short films, but with my capstone college project, I wanted to take the leap. It was important to me to tell a story about a bisexual protagonist that was comedic in nature, as many LGBTQ stories feature trauma and drama in the forefront of their depictions of queer people. Church camps, with their ridiculous activities and traditions, makes them a ripe place for comedy, and most of this film stems from the real experiences I had in a Georgia church camp (even a full-sized Jesus made of bread.) I hope, even with recent anti-gay legislation, that all churches become a safe place for LGBTQ youth, and that queer people can laugh at the quirky church-isms that graced their childhoods by watching this film. With STILL WATERS, her goal is to foster candid conversations around the difficult topic of loss and grief, and its impact on a relationship.Katia is a member of the Directors Guild of Canada, she holds a Masters in Documentary filmmaking from the Varan Doc Film Centre, France as well as a Masters in Languages and Literature from the Université Paris VIII, France.Director StatementIt all started with an assignment in my acting class--I had to choose a monologue to perform. I opted for an excerpt of STILL WATERS, the play. I was so moved by the story that I reached out to the playwright, Arthur M. Jolly, because I wanted to know more. When I read the entire play, I fell in love with the rawness of the story so I boldly told Arthur that I wanted to adapt his play into a short film. He agreed and my journey into narrative storytelling began.STILL WATERS sits at the crossroads of several themes that were important to me as well as my producing partner. They are queer and I am a mother so this story was a way for us to offer our POV on the contemporary society we live in. In addition to loss and grief, we wanted to explore female queerness, motherhood, mental health and relationships in a way we had not often seen on screen before.From a directorial standpoint, I had no interest in showing the events that caused the trauma, that is the accidental drowning of a toddler in the swimming pool. Instead, I chose to represent the death of the child metaphorically with a little plush toy and focus on the relationship dynamic between Gabrielle and Raquel. I wanted to delve into how past trauma, which only lives in the present, can affect individuals and impact a relationship.That’s why, in the editing suite, I made a point of selecting the takes where the performances were the rawest. For instance, the takes when the characters speak at each other and over each other because this is how arguments happen in real life. My through line is separation in togetherness, so we chose a location that allowed us to embody that divide visually.

ONE DAY (2025) 'Love the refrain and style of intonation. Mesmerising!'The most beautiful poem I have ever heard’‘Lee, this is a heartbreak of beautiful proportions. My heart swells…’Lee, a lovely heartfelt piece. Your language mixed with the tone of your voice is very beautiful.'‘one day’ is a very personal story to me. It is a story about friendship and about queer joy and it speaks about a situation which I've been going through recently and sometimes when you have friendships, sometimes you need distance and you need breaks and that's what this film is about, it's about having a friendship break with someone. It's a very personal film which fits in a body of recent work exploring love, loss, desire, and joy. as well. Hearing people's reactions and to see their faces when I've screened the film before has been incredible because it also helps me to heal and is cathartic. So the film has two, I suppose, components. It has the visual aspect with the writing which is a kind of drawn animation, and the writing is the poem that I am speaking called ‘one day’ and the layering of the lettering, it builds up to this almost sort of crescendo moment and then it gradually pulls back, it reverses. So it starts with the words ‘one day’ and then it builds up into an excess of words and lettering which you can't make out and then it slowly starts to unravel and come, it disappears. And for me that's a little bit like the friendship, it's something that you build and then it reaches a sort of maximum and then it's, you know, through time it can then gradually get back to a calm point. The way the word visual lays down &amp; builds like a sedimentary deposit, then erodes. Simple but effective. I like the way the graphics build and decline again to just the echo of my last word. So yeah, it's a very, very personal film for me and it's wonderful to be able to share it with a much wider audience. That from a period of hardship and uncertainty, I will demonstrate the uttermost kindnesses and compassion towards my friend, celebrate them as the beautiful person they are and (hopefully) make them smile that our friendship has lasted and survived against a lot of difficulties. This idea of drowning in happiness and queer joy …. historically queer people have had to covert or hide their feelings towards others, and this film is about being accepting of oneself and being proud of oneself and sort of showing themselves and presenting themselves in a way that is confident and celebratory of queer love and queer joy. His film Lights, Camera, Wichita opened the 2021 Doc Sunback Film Festival.Ray has been a magician since 1981, a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, and enjoys sharing his craft. Please tell us your motivation for making your film:I was really interested in creating a mockumentary due to the style of comedy inherent within the genre. I love comedy where the presence of the camera is part of the joke. Additionally, I felt that a mockumentary coming of age would be allow me to explore a really strong and nuanced point of view. The protagonist had to pretend like she's confident for the camera, but struggles to hide her feelings of uncertainty. I was missing my friends during quarantine, and found myself staring at a picture of them one day, this tugging feeling in my gut that made me want to go back to that moment and hug them again. I thought of my loved ones a lot while writing the script for After All. As far as the actual plot goes, I’m going to be a little selfish here and admit that I just wanted to make a feel-good short film about queer teenage girls. I wanted to keep it simple and practical for a group of underfunded college kids to make, yet still go deep enough to pack an emotional punch. What are the themes and central messages you wanted to convey with your submission?:As somewhat of a perpetual wallflower, I’ve watched a lot of relationships come and go in my life. One thing I’ve always wondered about is what it would take to foster a love that lasts. A lot of queer kids grow up without the kind of unconditional love that I think is so necessary in today’s fast-moving, highly-individualistic world. With this film, I wanted to tell a story whose main conflict did not revolve around homophobia, but rather the complex inner lives of its main characters, and their internal fight to remember why they want to be together in the first place. My mother used to bring me a new rented VHS of a different horror movie every Friday night on her way home from work. I cut my teeth on some of the cheesiest, goretastic, and best acted B horror movies in existence. I also loved a good comedy. When those two collided, I was in heaven.My vision as a brand-new director is to make a visually compelling movie on a shoestring budget. I want color to be a main actor. I want people to feel how eerie it is to be alone out in the middle of nowhere. I also want people to walk away chuckling and having scenes play over in their minds like a catchy song. Horror is a natural choice for my vision. It’s a comfortable genre and allows for so much creativity, without having such rigid guidelines. I intend on breaking the rules.The Cat Sitter was born out of a film festival. Cinema Systers Film Festival is the only all lesbian film festival in the USA. It’s also in my hometown. While attending a workshop held by Nicole de Meneses, I was encouraged to make a short film. I felt like I was able to make it happen. Nicole kept in touch and really wanted us to succeed. A year and a half later, here we are.In this short horror film, we had no budget. We used our phones for filming. We did buy an H4N Audio recorder for better sound quality. Episode 1, titled: Be Yourself, starts in Tokyo and travels to Matsuyama in Ehime prefecture. Along the way, host Tiffany Rossdale interviews activists, professors, cabaret hostesses, Shikoku’s first transgender city councillor, bar owners, their patrons, as well as people on the street. She finally found something more exciting than reading to broaden her imagination and take her to times, places, and events that she could only dream of. She began writing screenplays in college but spent her twenties and thirties working as a Human Resource Consultant while taking screenwriting classes and attending pitch competitions here and there. Then in 2020, there was the COVID lockdown, and she experienced an awakening. She decided that playing it safe is stupid and life is short. So she set out to do what she was always destined to do. She produced her first content, "The Unlearning of US: Episode 1, The Blue-gieman and US" of a six-part documentary series. It fits perfectly with this festival's genre.What are the themes and central messages you wanted to convey with your submission?:The message for this film is that there is a struggle to life no matter who you are. That can be compounded for those whose sexuality, appearance, or gender isn't the norm. Difficulties can sometimes become compounded and everyday situations can lead to doubt and uncertainty resulting in bad decisions. And also conveys that there was a lot of lost during COVID and there were some amazing souls that we need to grieve.
